I stopped photographing to check my composition and inspect the histogram. I
noticed the captain was also taking photos, the open fishing boat drifting along among the foundering iceberg ice.
I called to him, “If you’re taking pictures, who’s driving the boat?”

‘My exposure to nature has enhanced my ability to observe and later incorporate these observations into the work in this anthology. History was part of my childhood, the Cypress Hills Massacre, stories of wolfers, ghosts,
moonshine enterprises, the community picnics filled with equal quantities of fist fights and romances weave their way through my writing.
My traveling and love of stories took me from the prairies to live at L’Anse aux Meadows, Newfoundland & Labrador. The Viking Site was interesting, but the sea and rock were enchanting. The outport village people included me in their everyday life; icebergs, polar bears, Sunday dinners, superstitions and hunkering down with “storm chips” – this was my home, and all have become part of the stories and poems in Soul Shrapnel.’
